PIFS Co-hosts Regional Workshop on Democratic Institutions
29 February 2012: The Pacific Islands Forum Secretariat (PIFS) and the Commonwealth Secretariat Pacific jointly organized a Regional Workshop on Democratic Institutions, which provided politicians an opportunity to share experiences related to the challenges facing democracy in the Pacific.
Held in Brisbane, Australia, from 27-29 February 2012, the workshop focused on possible solutions applicable across the region to the challenges faced by democratic institutions. Participants also highlighted the importance of effective democratic institutions in the political stability of the Pacific region. The workshop was attended by: Mekere Morauta, former Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea and current Minister of Public Enterprises; Derek Sikua, former Prime Minister of Solomon Islands and current Leader of Opposition; Ieremia Tabai, former President of Kiribati and current MP; and Kamuta Latasi, former Prime Minister of Tuvalu and current Speaker of National Parliament.
