The 11th session of the UN Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues (UNPFII), which will convene in New York from 7-18 May 2012, will consider the special theme of "The Doctrine of Discovery: its enduring impact on indigenous peoples and the right to redress for past conquests (articles 28 and 37 of the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples)".

World Summit on the Information Society Forum 2012

The World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Forum 2012 is being organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), the UN Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and the UN Development Programme (UNDP). It will focus on sustainable development trends and information and communication technology (ICT) initiatives in some key focus areas of the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), such as health, education, gender empowerment and the environment. The Forum will also include the World Telecommunication and Information Society Day awards ceremony, which will recognize three outstanding laureates in the field of technology and gender.

UNFCCC Subsidiary Bodies May 2012

Interregional Meeting on MDG Indicators

The UN Economic Commission on Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) will host a meeting on the theme "Sharing knowledge to improve MDG monitoring and reporting". The meeting is expected to be attended by delegates from all five UN regional commissions, experts from specialized international agencies and representatives from some national statistics offices from each continent. The purpose of the meeting is to share successful experiences of monitoring the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), in order to promote horizontal cooperation among countries.

Second International Symposium: Effects of Climate Change on the World's Oceans

The primary sponsors of this symposium are: the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea; the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); and the North Pacific Marine Science Organization. Participants will address the role of climate change on the oceans, including: sea level rise; changes in thermo-haline ocean circulation; acidification; oligotrophy of temperate seas; changes in species abundance; distribution and phenology; and biodiversity loss. The symposium aims to bring together experts from different disciplines to exchange observations, results, models and ideas at a global scale and to discuss the opportunities to mitigate climate change and protect the marine environment and its living resources.

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day 2012

World Telecommunication and Information Society Day (WTISD) is intended to raise awareness of the potential for the use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) in societies and economies, as well as of ways to bridge the digital divide. The 17th of May marks the anniversary of the signing of the first International Telegraph Convention and the creation of the International Telecommunication Union. The theme of this year's WTISD is "Women and Girls in ICT".

Pacific Roll-out of International Year of Sustainable Energy for All

Hosted by the Secretariat of the Pacific Community (SPC), the Pacific roll-out of the International Year of Sustainable Energy for All (SE4ALL) will include the launch of: a documentary on energy security in the Pacific; an energy certification and accreditation scheme; and reports on the energy security status of Pacific Island countries (PICs).

Global Conference on Oceans, Climate and Security

This conference is organized by the Collaborative Institute for Oceans, Climate and Security of the University of Massachusetts Boston. The theme of the conference is “Collaboration and Action to Address the Impacts of Climate-related Ocean Change on Human, National and International Security.” The conference will bring together scientists, policy makers, and intellectual leaders to discuss the inter-connectedness between oceans, climate and security, and will consist of keynote speakers and panels dealing with both policy and science issues, and a plenary focusing on methods of communicating issues associated with climate change impacts.

Sixth Caribbean Environment Forum and Exhibition (CEF 5) and 16th Annual Wider Caribbean Waste Management Conference (ReCaribe)

These two events will be held simultaneously under the unified theme "The Green Economy: Challenges and Opportunities in Managing Health, Water, Waste, Land, Energy, Climate Change and our Natural Resources" to emphasize technologies, actions and strategies to address key environmental and health issues facing Caribbean small island developing States (SIDS). The CEF series on Caribbean health and environment has been organized by the Caribbean Community's (CARICOM) Caribbean Environmental Health Institute (CEHI) biennially since 2000. The annual ReCaribe has been organized since 1995 by Clean Islands International (CII) to discuss waste management issues in the wider Caribbean region. The combined event is being co-sponsored by the Government of St. Kitts and Nevis, the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (CAR/RCU), the Global Environment Facility's (GEF) Integrating Watershed and Coastal Area Management project (IWCAM), and the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

UNGA Thematic Debate on Preparations for UNCSD

The President of the 66th Session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) has indicated that he will convene this thematic debate on preparations for the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20) in 2012, under the theme "Road to Rio+20 and beyond". The thematic debate will also involve a consideration of the role of the General Assembly in supporting the objectives of Rio+20. Two panel discussions will focus on the centrality of political commitment, the importance of a sustained and meaningful engagement of all stakeholders for a successful outcome in Rio and the post-2015 Development Agenda.

Solving the E-Waste Problem (StEP) General Assembly

2012 Tech4Dev International Conference

As a UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Chair in Technologies for Development, the Cooperation and Development Center (CODEV) will host an international conference concerning Technologies for Sustainable Development: A Way to Reduce Poverty? This conference will look at how science and technologies can support both sustainable development and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in developing and emerging countries.

Carbon Expo 2012

The international trade fair and conference for emissions trading, carbon abatement solutions and clean technologies is sponsored by the World Bank. A three-day program will feature over 250 speakers in plenaries and workshops. The conference will provide insights into national situation reports, latest knowledge and trends, and discuss links between trading and other international policies and developments.

24th Session of the Caribbean Development and Cooperation Committee (CDCC)

The 24th CDCC will, inter alia, review the Regional Coordinating Mechanism (RCM) for implementation of the outcomes of the Mauritius Strategy for the further Implementation of the Programme of Action for the Sustainable Development of Small Island Developing States, review the implementation of the work programme for the UN Economic Commission for Latin American and the Caribbean (ECLAC) Subregional Headquarters for the Caribbean, and address the matter of strengthening statistical capacities in the Caribbean. The CDCC was created in 1975 as a permanent subsidiary body of ECLAC to promote the economic and social development of ECLAC Member and Associate Member States in the Caribbean. It meets at the ministerial level every two years.

GEF 42nd Council Meeting

The Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council is the main governing body of the GEF. It functions as an independent board of directors, with primary responsibility for developing, adopting, and evaluating GEF programmes. Council members representing 32 constituencies (16 from developing countries, 14 from developed countries, and two from countries with transitional economies) meet for three days, twice each year.

2012 Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme on Environment for Sustainable Development

The 2012 Asia-Pacific Leadership Programme is organized by the UN Environment Programme - Tongji Institute of Environment for Sustainable Development, and focuses on enhancing the capacity of emerging leaders in sustainable development, under the theme of "Green Economy and Sustainable Development”.

First Session of the STAC for the LBS Protocol

The first session of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) in charge of advising member countries in the implementation of the Protocol on Marine Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS Protocol) will take place in Aruba. The LBS Protocol is one of several to the Cartagena Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment in the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR). Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Belize, France, Guyana, Panama, Saint Lucia, Trinidad and Tobago, and the US are Parties to the Protocol. The UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Regional Coordinating Unit (CAR/RCU) provides the secretariat services for the Convention, its Protocols and its associated bodies such as the STAC. The first session of the STAC will discuss, inter alia: emerging pollution issues for the WCR; state of the WCR coastal and marine environment; implementation of the LBS Protocol; and new projects/needs.

Third PrepCom for UNCSD

The UN General Assembly, in December 2009, adopted a resolution calling for a UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, also referred to as Rio+20) to be convened in Brazil in 2012. This meeting will mark the 20th anniversary of the UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED), which convened in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The General Assembly resolution specifies that a three-day PrepCom should convene in May 2010, a two-day PrepCom should convene in March 2011, and a three-day PrepCom should convene immediately before the UNCSD (PrepCom III). On 4 November 2011, Dilma Rousseff, President of Brazil, announced a proposal to change the dates to 13-15 June 2012 for PrepCom III and 20-22 June 2012 for the UNCSD, in order to allow for highest-level participation. The previously scheduled dates were 28-30 May 2012 for PrepCom III and 4-6 June 2012 for the UNCSD.

2012 World Day to Combat Desertification

The 2012 celebration of World Day to Combat Desertification, an annual event on 17 June, will focus on the theme "Healthy soil sustains your life: LET’S GO LAND-DEGRADATION NEUTRAL". In 2012, World Day to Combat Desertification falls three days before the start of the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and the global observance is planned to take place in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

G20 Summit 2012

The Group of 20 (G20) Summit of the world’s twenty major economies will take place in Los Cabos, Mexico, and will be the first such summit to occur in Latin America. In its G20 Presidency role during 2012, Mexico has prioritized: economic stability and structural reform for growth and employment; strengthening of financial systems and procurement of financial inclusion for economic growth; improving international financial architecture in an interconnected global economy; mitigating negative effects on price level and volatility of commodities, in particular those affecting food security; and promoting sustainable development with a focus on infrastructure, energy efficiency, green growth and financing the fight against climate change.

Partnership Forum at Rio+20

The Partnership Forum, to be held from 20-22 June 2012 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will consist of sessions showcasing the contributions of partnerships to the implementation of sustainable development. The goal of the Forum is to build on the mandate agreed at the 11th session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD 11) and to "reenergize, revitalize and strengthen" partnerships to make them more effective and accountable vehicles for implementation. Sessions will: showcase best practices; discuss how partnerships can advance the implementation of the agreements reached at the UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20); identify successful models and opportunities for replication and scale up; and promote discussions on more effective accountability measures.

18th Meeting of the Adaptation Fund Board

The Adaptation Fund Board supervises and manages the Adaptation Fund under the authority and guidance of the countries that are party to the Kyoto Protocol. The Board is composed of 16 members and 16 alternates: two representatives from each of the United Nations regional groupings; one representative of the small island developing States; one representative of the least developed country parties; two other representatives from Annex I parties; and two other representatives from non-Annex I parties.

Fourth Session of the INC to Prepare a Global Legally Binding Instrument on Mercury

This meeting is scheduled to be the fourth of five Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) meetings to negotiate a legally binding instrument on mercury. INC 4 will take place at the "Conrad Punta del Este Resort and Casino" in Punta del Este, Uruguay, and will be preceded on 26 June by regional consultations and pre-sessional events.

Second Meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the ABS Protocol

The second meeting of the Intergovernmental Committee for the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and Equitable Benefit-sharing Arising from their Utilization (ABS), organized by the CBD Secretariat, was orginally scheduled to take place from 9-13 April 2012. It was rescheduled to take place from 2-6 July 2012.

Second Meeting of the IWG on the Mid-term Evaluation of the UNCCD Strategy

The tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) called for the creation of an Intersessional Working Group (IWG) on the mid-term evaluation of the ten year Strategy for the Convention. The IWG is expected to consist of 14 members: the President of the Conference of the Parties (COP); the chairpersons of the Committee for the Review of the Implementation of the Convention (CRIC) and of the Committee on Science and Technology (CST); two members from each of five regional groups; and one CSO representative.

33rd Regular Meeting of the Conference of CARICOM Heads of Government

The 33rd meeting of the Conference of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) Heads of Government will focus on, among other things, the results of the June 2012 UN Conference on Sustainable Development (UNCSD, or Rio+20), and a draft five-year strategic plan for reform of the CARICOM Secretariat.

ECLAC Ad Hoc Committee on Population and Development

The biennial ordinary meeting of the principal body overseeing UN Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) work on the population-development nexus will be held under the theme "Population, Territory and Development". The meeting will discuss, inter alia: population, territory and sustainable development in the Caribbean; reproductive health, adolescent fertility and territory; indigenous peoples, territory and sustainable development; and territory and public policy. The meeting also will define the regional process regarding the review and assessment of the 20 years since the 1994 International Conference on Population and Development held in Cairo ("Cairo+20"). In addition, during a special session, Ecuador will make a presentation on alternative indicators for measuring "good living" (buen vivir).

Ramsar COP 11

The 11th meeting of the contracting parties (COP 11) to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance especially as Waterfowl Habitat will be preceded by the 44th meeting of Standing Committee planned for 4 July 2012, and an additional day of regional meetings on 5-6 July 2011, as requested by many Contracting Parties. The Standing Committee agreed that the broad theme for World Wetlands Day 2012 and COP 11 is “Wetlands, Tourism and Recreation.”

30th Session of the FAO Committee on Fisheries

Third Workshop on Enhancing the Regional Distribution of CDM Projects in Asia and the Pacific

This workshop is being organized by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Institute for Global Environmental Strategies (IGES) and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) Secretariat, in collaboration with the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) Risoe Centre. The aim of the workshop is to provide a platform for participants to share best practices and key lessons, enhance their knowledge on the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and discuss technical, financial, and policy issues specific to their projects. In addition, the ADB, with support from UNFCCC Secretariat, will offer one-on-one project consultations with interested project developers from 17-18 July. The ultimate objective is to promote and support CDM project activities in Asia and the Pacific countries currently hosting fewer than 10 registered projects, particularly least developed countries (LDCs) and small island developing States (SIDS).

CBD Southern Indian Ocean Workshop to Facilitate Description of EBSAs

This workshop is convened by the Secretariat of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) in collaboration with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO). It aims to facilitate the description of ecologically or biologically significant marine areas (EBSAs), and will include one day of training on the application of EBSA criteria, as well as a four-day workshop. The workshop will include CBD National Focal Points and SBSTTA Focal Points in the Southern Indian Ocean region: Australia, Comoros, France, India, Indonesia, Kenya, Madagascar, Maldives, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, and the United Kingdom.

World Urban Forum 6 (WUF6)

This Forum will focus on the theme "The Urban Future," and will feature six thematic open dialogues, including one on environment, urban mobility and energy. The Congress theme will be Nature+, a slogan that captures the fundamental importance of nature and its inherent link to every aspect of people's lives. Biosafety Protocol COP/MOP 6

The sixth meeting of the Conference of the Parties serving as the Meeting of the Parties (COP/MOP 6) to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is organized by the CBD Secretariat. CBD COP 11

The 11th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 11) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) is organized by the CBD Secretariat. The High Level Segment will be held from 17-19 October 2012. The provisional agenda includes consideration of: the status of the Nagoya Protocol on Access to Genetic Resources and the Fair and Equitable Sharing of Benefits arising from their Utilization; implementation of the Strategic Plan 2011-2020 and progress towards the Aichi Biodiversity Targets; issues related to financial resources and the financial mechanism; issues related to cooperation, outreach and the UN Decade on Biodiversity; operations of the Convention; Article 8(j) and related provisions; in-depth review of the programme of work on island biodiversity; ways and means to support ecosystem restoration; marine and coastal biodiversity; biodiversity and climate change; other substantive issues arising from COP 10 decisions, including dryland, forest, inland waters, mountain, and agricultural biodiversity, protected areas, sustainable use of biodiversity, the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation, biofuels and biodiversity, invasive alien species, the Global Taxonomy Initiative, incentive measures, and biodiversity and development; as well as administrative and budgetary matters.

POPRC 8

The Persistent Organic Pollutants Review Committee (POPRC) is a subsidiary body to the Stockholm Convention established for reviewing chemicals proposed for listing in Annex A, Annex B, and/or Annex C. Sixth Meeting of the Scientific and Technical Advisory Committee (STAC 6) and Seventh Conference of Parties (COP 7) of the Cartagena Convention Protocol on Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife

STAC 6 for the Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW) Protocol of the Cartagena Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region (WCR) will meet on 22 October 2012 to review and make recommendations regarding the list of protected species proposed for the Protocol, review and assess reports on protected areas proposed for listing under the Protocol, and review the draft guidelines for exemptions under Article 11 of the Protocol. COP 7 of the SPAW Protocol will meet 23 October to review and approve the STAC 6 recommendations, decide on the 2013-14 work plan and budget for SPAW-related work, and review and agree on further activities of the Regional Activity Centre (RAC) for SPAW in Guadeloupe.

LBS Protocol COP 1

The first session of the Conference of Parties (COP 1) to the Protocol on Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS Protocol) to the Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment of the Wider Caribbean Region (Cartagena Convention) will be held to: review and approve the recommendations of the first meeting of the Scientific, Technical and Advisory Committee (STAC 1) for the Protocol held from 5-7 June 2012; review and agree on further activities of the LBS Regional Activity Centres (RACs) in Cuba, and Trinidad and Tobago; and decide on the 2013-14 work plan and budget for activities under the Protocol and the Assessment and Management of Environmental Pollution (AMEP) sub-programme of UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP).

IGM 15 on the Action Plan for the CEP and Cartagena Convention COP 12

The biennial Intergovernmental Meeting (IGM) is the major forum of the UN Environment Programme's (UNEP) Caribbean Environment Programme (CEP). The Convention for the Protection and Development of the Marine Environment in the Wider Caribbean Region (Cartagena Convention) is the principal legal framework for CEP, together with its three current Protocols on Cooperation in Combating Oil Spills, Pollution from Land-Based Sources and Activities (LBS Protocol), and on Specially Protected Areas and Wildlife (SPAW Protocol). IGM 15 and the 12th session of the Conference of Parties (COP 12) to the Cartagena Convention will be held jointly from 25-27 October to: review and adopt the CEP work plan and budget for 2013-14; review and act on the decisions from LBS COP 1 and SPAW COP 7, as well as the recommendations of the Sixth Meeting of the Steering Committee to the Oil Spills Protocol held 9-10 May 2012; review progress on implementing the decisions of IGM 14 and Cartagena Convention COP 11; and evaluate projects and activities implemented with the CEP framework during the 2010-12 biennium.

Seventh Conference of the Parties to the Nairobi Convention

The Seventh Conference of the Parties (COP 7) to the Nairobi Convention is convening under the theme "Partnering for a Healthy West Indian Ocean". This meeting will feature a "Science for Policy" Workshop from 10-11 December 2012. A policy makers and expert meeting to review decisions will be held on 12 December 2012, followed by the COP from 13-14 December 2012. COP 7 is expected to foster collaboration between international, regional and local organizations and secure partnerships between key players. The Nairobi Convention area includes Comoros, France, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Mozambique, Seychelles, Somalia, Tanzania and South Africa.

Fifth Session of the INC to Prepare a Legally Binding Instrument on Mercury

This meeting is scheduled to be the final of five Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) meetings to negotiate a legally binding instrument on mercury. The meeting will take place sometime between 12-20 January 2013, with the final decision to be reached by the Bureau.
